Ashwagandha benefits for men: what the research actually shows

One of the more independently replicated adaptogens — but "replicated" doesn't mean "dramatic." Here's what real RCTs and meta-analyses actually found, and the funding disclosures worth knowing before you read the studies as neutral.

The short version

What the research actually supports

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the more heavily researched adaptogens, and unlike some botanicals on the market, several of its core findings have been replicated by more than one independent research group. That's genuinely reassuring — but it's also easy to overstate what "replicated" means here, so this page tries to stay specific about effect sizes rather than just citing that studies exist.

Stress and cortisol

This is the area with the most consistent support. A 60-day randomized trial found cortisol dropped 23% more than placebo, alongside a significant improvement in anxiety scores1. The effect on broader "stress" scales was less uniform — a separate trial in adults 40-75 found a real fatigue improvement but no significant difference on the study's main stress measure2, a useful reminder that different studies measuring "stress" don't always agree.

Sleep

The best single piece of evidence here is a 2021 meta-analysis pooling five randomized trials (400 participants)3. It found a small-to-moderate improvement in overall sleep quality — meaningfully stronger in people with diagnosed insomnia than in generally healthy sleepers, and only at doses of 600mg or more, taken for at least 8 weeks. If you're already sleeping reasonably well, this research doesn't suggest much upside; if sleep is a real problem, it's the most defensible reason to try ashwagandha specifically.

Testosterone and strength

An 8-week trial in resistance-trained men found significantly greater strength gains and a testosterone increase versus placebo (+96.2 ng/dL vs. +18.0 ng/dL)4 — this is the most-cited "ashwagandha for testosterone" study online. A separate trial in men 40-75 found a smaller free-testosterone rise (about 13% relative to placebo)2, and a crossover study in overweight men 40-70 found testosterone and DHEA-S both rose more than placebo, but self-reported fatigue and sexual well-being did not differ significantly between groups5 — meaning the hormone panel moved without men necessarily feeling a difference. Across this research, testosterone increases cluster around 12-17% relative to placebo. Real, but modest — not the kind of change that would produce a dramatic transformation.

The funding disclosure that actually matters here

Nearly every trial cited above used one of three specific patented extracts — KSM-66, Shoden, or Witholytin — supplied and, in most cases, funded by that extract's manufacturer. Several lead researchers across this body of work have disclosed ongoing financial ties (consulting, speaking fees, or running contract research for) to these companies. That doesn't make the findings false. Randomized, placebo-controlled trials are still real evidence even when industry-funded. But it does mean the results shouldn't be treated as fully independent confirmation, and it's the kind of disclosure a page selling you the product usually leaves out.

Dosage and what to look for on a label

The trials above studied 240-600mg per day of a standardized root extract, taken for 8 weeks or longer — single doses or short courses aren't what was tested. The specific standardization matters and these aren't interchangeable:

A label that just says "ashwagandha root powder" with no extract name or withanolide percentage isn't the same thing that was actually studied.

The bottom line

Ashwagandha's best-supported use for men is stress and sleep, not testosterone — the hormone and strength findings are real but modest, industry-funded, and shouldn't be the main reason to try it. If sleep or stress is the actual problem, the evidence is more directly on point than the testosterone marketing suggests.
